When the King Doesn’t Fit Expectations
Palm Sunday (Matthew 21:1–11; John 12:12–16) reveals a powerful truth: Jesus is King—but not always the kind of King people expect. The crowd welcomed Him, quoting Psalm 118:26, believing He would overthrow Roman rule. Yet Jesus came to conquer something far deeper— sin and death.
Zechariah 9:9 had already foretold this: “Behold, your king is coming to you… humble and mounted on a donkey.” His humility wasn’t weakness—it was mission. Within days, the same voices praising Him would turn against Him (Luke 23:21). Why? Because He didn’t meet their expectations.
And if we’re honest, we can do the same.
We celebrate Jesus when He blesses us, answers prayers quickly, or fits our plans. But what about when He leads us through sacrifice, surrender, or waiting? Philippians 2:8 reminds us that Jesus “humbled himself… to death on a cross.” His kingdom is not built on comfort, but on surrender.
So today, ask yourself: Am I following Jesus as He is—or as I want Him to be? True discipleship means trusting His ways, even when they don’t match our expectations. Lay down your “palms”—your desires, plans, and control—and receive Him as King on His terms. Don’t just praise the King—submit to Him.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are the humble King. Forgive me for the times I’ve expected You to serve my plans instead of surrendering to Yours. Teach me to trust You, follow You, and worship You in truth. Hosanna—save me, lead me, and change me. Amen.
