About Us

Who We Are

Lord's Supper...

  • Our worship involves the sharing of the Lord’s Supper. Jesus instituted this observance as he and his apostles shared in the Passover meal on the evening before his death on the cross (Luke 22.14-23).
  • On this occasion, Jesus took the bread, blessed it and broke it, giving it to his disciples to eat, explaining, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me” (Luke 26.19). Then, Jesus took the cup, filled with the fruit of the vine, and passed it to his disciples to drink, explaining, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.”
  • Thus, the Lord’s Supper, the Communion feast, is a commemoration of Jesus’ death on the cross. It is a commemoration that is to take place on the first day of every week (Acts 20.7; 1 Corinthians 11.17-34). And, so, we partake of the Lord’s Supper each and every Sunday as we gather together.

Prayer...

Jesus spent a lot of time in prayer and gave us examples of how to pray. Prayer includes but is not limited to: praise for God, kingdom petitions, God's will, requests for daily needs, forgiveness of ourselves, our forgiveness of others and deliverance from evil.

Fellowship...

As a family of believers we value time spent together in worship, in study, and also in settings that are less formal. We enjoy being together and we value the bonds that unite us as believers.

Singing...

Our worship involves singing songs of praise and reflection to God. Our music is made of simple song, with lyrics inspired from the Word of God, his works, and his character. We use no instruments of music; we lift only our blended voices to God in praise. We encourage all to sing, for this we are commanded to do.

Teaching/Reading God’s Word...

Our worship involves the teaching/reading of God’s Word. Each Sunday we gather together to hear messages spoken from God’s Word. The sermons that are preached are plain, earnest, Christ-centered, and relevant.

Walter Johnson - Elder

Walter Johnson - Elder

I was born and grew up in White Plains, NY where I graduated from high school and met Susan, my future wife, who introduced me to the Church. I grew up in the Congregationalist church. Susan and I went to different colleges and our paths did not cross again until we both moved independently to Delaware. Shortly after we married in 1987, we decided to worship at the Cedars Church of Christ.

I graduated from St. Lawrence University and spent my career in banking and finance at The Bank of New York and then Merrill Lynch where I was a financial adviser and Certified Financial Planner.

I was a middle and high school bible class teacher for nine years in White Plains and church treasurer in White Plains and Cedars/Greenback for fourteen years. I was a deacon for many years before becoming an elder in 2022.

We each need to have our own mission(s) and to be rooted in a love and dedication to our God and His Son and Scripture and to reflect this in our lives.

Our Beliefs

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. He destined us in love to be his sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace which he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace which he lavished upon us. For he has made known to us in all wisdom and insight the mystery of his will, according to his purpose which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fulness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. Ephesians 1:3-10
