Make Room For People

Two people greeting each other with a smile

It is possible to be busy doing church work and still miss the people right in front of us.

We can come in, find our seat, speak to the same people we always speak to, worship, and go home — without ever noticing the visitor sitting alone, the member who looks discouraged, or the person who has quietly been missing.

Paul wrote:

“Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.”

— Romans 15:7

Jesus was good at making room for people.

He noticed the people others ignored. He stopped when others kept walking. He welcomed people who did not always fit comfortably into everyone else’s circle.

That is something the church should be known for too.

Sometimes ministry is not complicated.

  • Sit beside somebody.

  • Introduce yourself.

  • Ask how they are doing.

  • Call someone you have not seen.

  • Invite somebody into your conversation instead of making them feel like an outsider.

You never know what someone carried through the doors with them.

A simple conversation may mean more than you realize.

So this Sunday, before you leave, take a look around.

Don’t just find your seat. Find somebody.

After all, “we are in the people business.”
